Warm-Season Turf in Late Summer: When to Feed Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine

Late summer can be one of the most confusing times to fertilize warm-season turf. Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass may still be green and actively growing in August, especially across the southern United States. That can make another fertilizer application seem like an easy decision.

The problem is that green does not necessarily mean the lawn should continue receiving nitrogen.

By late August, many warm-season lawns are beginning a physiological transition. Day length is shortening, nighttime temperatures are eventually going to fall, and the grass must move from aggressive summer growth toward the slower growth and carbohydrate storage that precede dormancy. Fertilizer applied early enough in the month may still support useful growth. The same nitrogen applied too late can encourage tender new leaves when the plant should be preparing for cooler weather.

That timing difference is particularly important on August 26, 2026. In parts of Georgia and South Carolina, common Extension recommendations place the final substantial nitrogen application for bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass around mid-August. Clemson’s turf maintenance calendars, for example, generally recommend the final late-summer nitrogen application before August 15 for all three species. UGA likewise advises that warm-season lawns should finish their nitrogen program as summer winds down rather than continuing N into fall, because late stimulation can interfere with dormancy and increase cold-injury and disease concerns.

Farther south, particularly in Florida, the calendar can look different because the warm-season growing period lasts longer. UF/IFAS notes that turfgrass can grow essentially year-round in South Florida and generally from about April through September in North and Central Florida. Local fertilizer ordinances can also restrict when nitrogen and phosphorus may legally be applied, so the correct August decision may depend as much on location as on grass species.

The useful question is therefore not simply, “Can I fertilize warm-season grass in August?” The better question is whether this particular lawn, in this particular climate, still has enough active growing season remaining to use the fertilizer without being pushed too late.

Late Summer Is a Transition Period, Not Just Another Month of Summer Feeding

Warm-season grasses perform best during warm weather. Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass all produce their strongest growth when soil and air temperatures favor active warm-season metabolism.

During June and July, nitrogen can support canopy growth, recovery from mowing, stolon and rhizome development, and general turf density. By late August in much of the transition zone and Southeast, the same grass is beginning to approach the end of that aggressive growth period.

That change may not be obvious from color.

A bermudagrass lawn can still look green in late August while its growth rate is beginning to slow. Zoysiagrass may still produce new leaves but require less nitrogen than it did in June. St. Augustinegrass may remain lush in humid coastal conditions even while the regional fertilizer calendar is approaching its cutoff.

This is why fertilizing strictly according to appearance can lead to late applications.

Nitrogen is primarily a growth nutrient. It encourages leaf production and can increase the amount of mowing and water the lawn requires. As fall approaches, the goal should gradually shift from producing maximum leaf growth toward maintaining enough nutrition for the turf to finish the season healthy.

UGA’s warm-season lawn guidance makes this point directly: nitrogen should stop as the active summer growing season comes to an end so the grass can move naturally toward dormancy. Continuing nitrogen into fall can prolong tender growth and is associated with greater cold-injury and spring dead spot concerns in susceptible turf.

For homeowners and landscape professionals, that means a late-August fertilizer decision should be more conservative than a June decision.

Bermudagrass Can Still Be Hungry in August, but Timing Matters

Bermudagrass is generally the most aggressive-growing of the three grasses discussed here.

Under full sun, adequate irrigation, regular mowing, and good soil conditions, bermudagrass can use considerable nitrogen through the summer. Clemson recommends annual nitrogen programs that are divided through the active growing season, including a final late-summer feeding of roughly one-half to one pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet depending on soil and management, generally before August 15 under South Carolina conditions.

UGA similarly includes August in the normal fertilization period for bermudagrass in Georgia, while more recent South Georgia guidance recommends applying N every six to eight weeks only through roughly mid-August.

The distinction between early August and late August matters.

An actively growing bermudagrass lawn on August 5 with good soil moisture and several weeks of strong summer growth ahead may have time to convert a final nitrogen application into useful turf density. That same lawn on August 30 in a cooler part of the transition zone may have much less time before nights begin slowing growth.

The amount already applied during the season also matters.

If the lawn has already received the upper end of its recommended annual nitrogen range, another late-summer feeding may add little benefit. Dark green, rapidly growing bermudagrass that requires mowing every few days is not asking for more fertilizer simply because August has not ended.

A lighter-maintenance lawn should not be managed like a golf fairway.

Zoysiagrass Usually Needs Less Nitrogen Pressure Than Bermudagrass

Zoysiagrass grows more slowly and generally requires less aggressive nitrogen management than highly maintained bermudagrass.

That slower growth is part of its appeal. Once established, zoysia can form dense turf without requiring the same mowing and nitrogen intensity that some bermudagrass lawns receive.

The mistake is treating the two grasses as though they have identical fertilizer needs.

Clemson’s zoysiagrass calendar recommends late-summer nitrogen while the turf remains actively growing but also places the final application before about mid-August under South Carolina conditions. UGA guidance likewise keeps the normal zoysiagrass fertilizer season within the May-through-August growth period rather than extending routine nitrogen into fall.

Excessive nitrogen can create overly lush zoysia growth, more thatch, greater mowing demand, and conditions that may favor certain disease problems.

A zoysiagrass lawn that is already dense, uniformly green, and growing well in late August may benefit more from proper irrigation and mowing than from another fertilizer pass.

The objective should be maintaining healthy growth, not trying to make zoysia grow at bermudagrass speed.

St. Augustinegrass Needs Enough Nutrition, but It Also Responds Poorly to Excess

St. Augustinegrass is common throughout the Gulf Coast, Florida, and other warm areas because it performs well in heat and has greater shade tolerance than bermudagrass.

It also responds noticeably to fertility.

Clemson recommends approximately two to four pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet over the growing season for St. Augustinegrass, with the higher end generally associated with sandy soils and greater maintenance intensity. Its late-summer recommendation is roughly one-half to one pound of N per 1,000 square feet before about August 15 under South Carolina conditions.

That does not mean every St. Augustine lawn should receive another pound of N simply because August arrived.

High nitrogen can produce lush tissue that requires more irrigation and mowing, and summer nitrogen management can interact with disease and insect pressure. UF/IFAS specifically notes that homeowners sometimes use nitrogen simply to make summer St. Augustinegrass darker green, even when encouraging more growth is not desirable. Iron may sometimes improve color without creating the same growth response.

That is a useful distinction.

A pale lawn is not automatically a hungry lawn.

Soil pH, iron availability, root health, water management, insects, disease, and excessive phosphorus can all influence appearance.

Florida Requires a Different Calendar—and Sometimes Different Legal Rules

Warm-season turf recommendations cannot be copied from Georgia or South Carolina directly into Florida.

UF/IFAS notes that North and Central Florida turf generally grows from spring through roughly September, while South Florida can maintain active growth throughout the year.

That longer growing season means an August nitrogen application can still be agronomically appropriate in some Florida settings even after the recommended nitrogen window has ended farther north.

However, local ordinances may override the normal turf calendar.

UF/IFAS reports that numerous Florida counties and municipalities have landscape fertilizer ordinances, including some that prohibit or restrict nitrogen and phosphorus applications during the summer rainy season. Some communities use June 1 through September 30 restrictions, while specific requirements vary by jurisdiction.

UF/IFAS provides a fertilizer-ordinance lookup tool because the rules vary enough that homeowners and landscape contractors should verify the requirements for their specific location rather than relying on a statewide assumption.

This is particularly important for St. Augustinegrass because so much of it is grown in Florida.

Even if the turf is actively growing and could physiologically use nitrogen, a local rainy-season ordinance may prohibit the application.

The legal requirement comes first.

Soil Moisture Matters Before Any Late-Summer Fertilizer Application

A grass cannot make efficient use of fertilizer while the root zone is severely dry.

Nutrients need soil water to dissolve, move toward roots, and enter the plant. A drought-stressed lawn may remain green enough to look alive while producing very little new growth.

Applying nitrogen under those conditions can create several problems.

If rainfall does not follow, the fertilizer may remain concentrated near the soil surface. Quick-release nitrogen sources may have greater burn or volatilization concerns depending on formulation and weather. If enough moisture arrives to activate the fertilizer but not enough to support sustained turf growth, the response can be inconsistent.

More importantly, fertilizer does not replace water.

A late-August bermudagrass lawn that has slowed because of dry soil does not necessarily need more N. It may need irrigation or meaningful rainfall first.

UGA recommends adjusting mowing height upward during periods of heat and water stress, while established turf generally performs best when irrigation is deep enough to support the root system rather than applied as frequent light sprinkles.

The fertilizer application should follow the lawn’s ability to grow.

Do Not Fertilize Immediately Ahead of Heavy Rain

Late-summer thunderstorms create the opposite moisture problem.

Rain is useful for moving fertilizer into the turf root zone, but an intense storm can move nutrients off the lawn before they have a chance to be used.

UF/IFAS advises homeowners not to fertilize when heavy rain is likely within approximately 24 hours because fertilizer may be washed or leached away.

Current Florida lawn guidance also recommends keeping fertilizer away from hard surfaces and water bodies and lightly watering material into the lawn rather than relying on a major storm for incorporation.

This principle applies well beyond Florida.

A moderate irrigation after spreading can be helpful. A tropical downpour washing granules toward a storm drain is not fertilizer efficiency.

Phosphorus Should Not Be Part of Every Lawn Feeding

One of the most important reasons to soil test a lawn is to determine whether phosphorus is actually needed.

Warm-season turf requires phosphorus, but many established soils already contain enough to support healthy growth.

Clemson’s maintenance guidance for bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass repeatedly states that phosphorus should be applied according to soil-test results rather than included automatically in every summer feeding.

Florida goes even farther because phosphorus fertilizer is regulated.

UF/IFAS notes that Florida’s home-lawn fertilizer rule limits phosphorus application and generally requires a demonstrated need, with additional P beyond basic limits supported by soil-test deficiency.

This is why a balanced fertilizer is not automatically the right fertilizer.

If a lawn tests adequate or high in phosphorus, a zero in the middle number may be exactly what the turf program needs.

Potassium Is Important in Late Summer, but “Winterizer” Should Not Mean Automatic Potash

Potassium often receives increased attention late in the warm-season growing period because it contributes to water regulation, enzyme activity, and normal stress physiology.

Clemson’s maintenance programs for bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass all emphasize maintaining adequate potassium as warm-season turf approaches dormancy.

The important word is adequate.

Applying potassium where the soil or turf system needs K can correct a real nutrient limitation. Applying additional potassium to soil already supplying enough does not automatically create a tougher or more winter-hardy lawn.

This distinction becomes especially important after the nitrogen cutoff.

Clemson recommends that, where soil testing indicates low to medium potassium, potash can still be applied several weeks before the expected first frost without adding nitrogen. Its St. Augustine calendar, for example, allows a potassium-only treatment approximately four to six weeks before frost where testing supports the need.

That is a much more precise idea of “winterizing” than spreading another high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer late in the season.

A Potassium-Forward Fertilizer Can Fit the Final Active-Growth Window

When warm-season turf is still actively growing, the regional nitrogen window remains open, phosphorus is not needed, and potassium deserves emphasis, Supply Solutions 7-0-26 Organic Fertilizer provides a nutrient profile that is very different from a conventional high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer.

The product contains 7 percent nitrogen and 26 percent potash with no guaranteed phosphate. Supply Solutions lists it for lawn use as well as garden applications and provides lower summer and fall lawn application rates than its spring rate.

The reason to use a 7-0-26 analysis on warm-season turf is that the lawn still needs a modest amount of nitrogen during active late-summer growth while potassium is also required and additional phosphorus is unnecessary.

The timing is important. This is not a product to use simply because September is approaching. It fits while bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, or St. Augustinegrass is actively growing and local Extension guidance still supports nitrogen application.

The problem it solves is a nutrient program requiring some N and comparatively more K without additional phosphate.

If the nitrogen cutoff has passed in your region, a 7-0-26 fertilizer still contains nitrogen and should not be treated as a nitrogen-free winterizer.

Likewise, if soil or regional guidance does not indicate a potassium need, the high K analysis is not automatically valuable simply because the season is changing.

Know How Much Nitrogen the Product Actually Applies

A lower first number does not mean the nitrogen can be ignored.

Supply Solutions lists a summer and fall lawn rate of 5 to 10 pounds of 7-0-26 per 1,000 square feet.

At 5 pounds of product, the nitrogen application is:

5 × 0.07 = 0.35 pound of actual N per 1,000 square feet

At 10 pounds:

10 × 0.07 = 0.70 pound of actual N per 1,000 square feet

The corresponding potassium application is much larger because the product contains 26 percent K₂O.

At 5 pounds of product:

5 × 0.26 = 1.3 pounds of K₂O per 1,000 square feet

At 10 pounds:

10 × 0.26 = 2.6 pounds of K₂O per 1,000 square feet

Those are meaningful nutrient rates.

They should be compared with soil-test recommendations, regional turf guidance, previous seasonal applications, and any applicable fertilizer regulations before the product is spread.

A product label gives the allowable or recommended product-use framework. Agronomic judgment determines whether the lawn needs the nutrients represented by that rate.

Bermudagrass Does Not Need a Final Feeding Just Because It Has Thin Spots

Late summer also makes weak areas easier to notice.

Bermudagrass may be thin under shade, along compacted traffic areas, beside trees, or where irrigation does not reach uniformly.

Nitrogen cannot correct those limitations.

Bermuda requires strong sunlight. A shaded section may remain thin no matter how aggressively it is fertilized.

Compaction can restrict roots and water infiltration. Poor irrigation coverage can leave dry arcs throughout the lawn. Heavy thatch can interfere with water movement. Disease or insects can also create thinning.

Before applying another late-summer fertilizer, look at the pattern of weakness.

If the healthiest grass is located in full sun while shaded areas remain thin despite receiving the same fertilizer, light is probably more limiting than nutrition.

Zoysiagrass Thatch Should Not Be Encouraged With Unnecessary Late Nitrogen

Zoysiagrass naturally develops a dense layer of stolons, rhizomes, and organic material near the soil surface.

Under excessive fertility, this layer can become more pronounced.

Late-summer nitrogen that is not needed can therefore create more mowing and more growth without necessarily improving long-term turf quality.

Core aeration can be useful during the active growing period where compaction is a concern, and UGA identifies May through August as an appropriate aeration window for actively growing warm-season turf.

The point is that improving root-zone conditions can sometimes do more for a zoysia lawn than another fertilizer application.

If the lawn is dense, healthy, and already adequately fertilized, late August may be the time to stop feeding rather than find a reason for one more pass.

St. Augustine Color Problems May Be Related to Iron or Soil pH

St. Augustinegrass frequently develops yellow color that homeowners interpret as low nitrogen.

That can be misleading.

Clemson notes that yellow St. Augustinegrass during the growing season may indicate iron deficiency associated with high soil pH or excessive phosphorus. UF/IFAS makes a similar recommendation, suggesting iron may be used to improve summer color without encouraging the additional growth that comes from nitrogen.

This is particularly relevant late in summer because homeowners often want to keep the lawn dark green as growth begins slowing.

If the grass is yellow because iron availability is restricted, another nitrogen application may produce little benefit while creating excessive growth pressure.

Soil testing and a closer look at symptoms are more useful than responding to color alone.

Returning Clippings Can Reduce the Amount of Fertilizer the Lawn Needs

Grass clippings contain nutrients.

When they are returned to the lawn rather than bagged and hauled away, those nutrients eventually cycle back into the soil as the tissue decomposes.

UGA’s grasscycling guidance notes that established lawns where clippings are routinely returned can often be maintained with lower fertilizer inputs than lawns where clippings are constantly removed.

This matters throughout the growing season, but it can be particularly useful during late summer when the goal is no longer to maximize growth.

A homeowner returning clippings may already be recycling enough nitrogen and potassium to reduce the need for another fertilizer application.

Clippings also do not normally create thatch when the lawn is mowed regularly. They are mostly water and readily decomposable leaf tissue.

Fertilizer planning should account for that internal nutrient recycling.

New Warm-Season Sod Needs Different Fertility Management

Newly installed turf should not automatically receive the same fertilizer program as an established lawn.

Roots from fresh sod have not fully grown into the underlying soil, and applying large fertilizer rates before establishment can increase nutrient-loss risk.

UF/IFAS recommends waiting approximately 30 to 60 days after planting before applying nitrogen fertilizer to newly planted turfgrass and discourages preplant nitrogen fertilizer. Phosphorus should not be applied before planting unless testing shows the soil is deficient.

Late-August installation also becomes increasingly risky in areas approaching dormancy because warm-season turf needs enough remaining growing time to develop roots before cold weather.

A newly laid bermudagrass or zoysia lawn in the transition zone should therefore be managed around rooting and moisture first, not pushed with a heavy fertilizer treatment simply to produce surface color.

Do Not Let a “Weed and Feed” Product Dictate the Fertilizer Calendar

Weed control and fertilizer timing do not always overlap.

Late summer is often a period when pre-emergence herbicides are applied to prevent winter weeds. That does not mean warm-season turf should automatically receive another nitrogen application at the same time.

UGA cautions that combination weed-and-feed products can place fertilizer on warm-season grass at a time when the herbicide is appropriate but the nitrogen is not.

The better approach is to treat the weed problem and the nutrient requirement as separate decisions.

If a pre-emergent is needed in September but nitrogen should have stopped in August, select a weed-control product that does not force unnecessary fertilizer onto the lawn.

Convenience should not override timing.

Late Summer Is Also the Time to Stop Chasing Dark-Green Color

A warm-season lawn naturally changes as fall approaches.

Growth slows. Color eventually softens. In regions with frost, dormancy will turn the lawn brown regardless of how much nitrogen was applied in August.

Trying to delay that transition with fertilizer can work against the biology of the grass.

The goal is not to keep bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, or St. Augustinegrass growing aggressively for as long as possible. The goal is to finish the natural growing season with adequate nutrition, healthy roots, suitable moisture, and enough stored energy to enter the next seasonal phase normally.

That is why the final fertilizer application should feel different from the first spring application.

Spring fertility supports acceleration.

Late-summer fertility should support completion.

The Correct August Decision Is Different in Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Miami

Geography matters enough that homeowners should resist national lawn calendars that give one date for the entire United States.

In Georgia and South Carolina, the commonly recommended late-summer nitrogen window is already closing or closed by late August.

In North Florida, warm-season turf may remain actively growing through September, and UF/IFAS recommendations can include later fertilizer timing. A March 2026 UF/IFAS Extension update for North Florida, for example, identifies September as an important fertility period in some maintenance programs.

In South Florida, turf may grow throughout the year.

At the same time, local Florida fertilizer ordinances may prohibit N and P application during parts of that growing season.

This is why the words “August fertilizer” should always be followed by “where?”

Warm-season grasses follow temperature, not the national calendar.

Late-Summer Fertility Should Leave the Lawn Ready for the Next Season

A good late-summer turf program is usually less about correcting everything at once and more about finishing the growing season properly.

Bermudagrass should receive enough nitrogen during its active season to remain dense without being pushed after the regional cutoff. Zoysiagrass should be managed more conservatively so late fertility does not simply create excess growth and thatch. St. Augustinegrass should receive adequate nutrition while avoiding the assumption that every yellow lawn needs more nitrogen.

Phosphorus should be applied only when testing or regional guidance supports it. Potassium should be maintained where it is actually needed rather than being treated as a universal winterizing treatment. Soil moisture, irrigation, mowing, compaction, thatch, insects, disease, and local fertilizer regulations all need to be considered before another bag is opened.

Where a warm-season lawn is still within its active regional nitrogen window and needs modest nitrogen together with substantially more potassium but no additional phosphorus, Supply Solutions 7-0-26 Organic Fertilizer can fit that specific nutrient pattern.
